finding a equality between restraint and assuage in home decor can be a struggle - too simple and it can feel stark, too comfortable and it can be treacly. we have to applaud at reader mary for the treatment of walking that fine line between the two styles and coming up a title-holder. and more impressive yet, the yoke have maintained a calm, serene vibe throughout the home while welcoming a new baby in process. well done.

>>log slideshow we really like this place because it seems to take control of so many of the characteristics lauded around here - it’s warm and inviting, clean and uncluttered… simple without masking the owner’s slighting style and needs. there’s a great intermingle of craigslist finds and homemade pieces alongside store bought items, but by being sever mince about what comes into their home, the overall impression feels anything but overwhelming. at survey: our style: we lean mid century although we’re expansive to just about anything. we try to be particular about what comes into the apartment. occasionally, i’ll have a moment of frailty and become convinced that we need a mammoth, white fainting chairwoman (seller’s stripe, not mine) for our danged small bedroom. this is when the gatekeeper, otherwise known as my husband, steps in and speaks in slow, sense-making sentences. the ?lan for our home: simple, calm, and comfy. favorite element: i’m a big fan of the credenza in the dining room. it’s the first piece of fixtures i bought on ebay and i couldn’t be happier with it. my promote favorite piece is another ebay purchase ? the mid century rocker in our baby’s room. there was a second more stagecraft involved with shipping, fabric hunting and the world’s strangest upholsterer (is that a word?) but, in the end, it was all worth it. i hope to pass it down to our daughter one day. i also have a determined recall in my heart for the throw pillows. with the exception of the two in our bedroom and the orange radial pillow, i made them all. without a sewing contraption, i might add. sewing machines scare and confuse me. biggest challenge in designing our home: it’s really hard for me to be done with the apartment, to let up on and authorize to it be what it has become. apartment therapy is no help in this department. it inspires me daily and our apartment just isn’t boastfully enough for daily influence. you have to stop! what friends say about our home: our friends always have nice things to answer about our place. that’s why they’re our friends. biggest embarrassment in our home: the teal carpet in the hallway. it’s a rental. what can you do? proudest diy: the dining room table. i base it on craigslist and my husband, hans, transformed it into the table you see here. it was no easy task. the woman who sold it to us had kept it in her garage and had been using it as a gardening table. the supreme was absolutely stripped of the imaginative ruin and had several large, circular water stains from the weed pots. we paid $40 and i was actually worried that we paid too much. now it stands as a testament to aid chances, good old-fashioned hard work and the awesomeness that is hans. biggest indulgence with respect to our home: the mid century rocker. like i said before, it was a rocky (hehe) and expensive plague, from start to finish. best advice given or received: i don’t memorialize where i heard this or if it just popped into my head inseparable lifetime but “be a lion” is a mantra my husband and i try to live by. it’s something we say almost every day, whether we’re discussing career goals or what to eat recompense dinner. not sure how that translates into our décor, but i like to think it’s in there somewhere. fantasy source for ingredients: i would fondle to buy from 1stdibs. but then, i think we’d oblige to stir up to a much fancier apartment. probably somewhere in france.

Mbeki tries to seal Zimbabwe deal

Talks are under way in Zimbabwe to try to finalise a power-sharing deal between President Robert Mugabe and the opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai.

Aaron peirsol

South African President Thabo Mbeki is acting as mediator at the talks, which are taking place in a Harare hotel.

Reports in some South African papers say a deal is close, and that a final agreement could be reached shortly.

Mr Mugabe and Mr Tsvangirai are due to meet after more than a week of talks between their parties, reports say.

One widely touted solution is that Mr Mugabe, the Zanu-PF leader, may become ceremonial president while Mr Tsvangirai, leader of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change, is made executive prime minister.

But there has been no official comment on these reports, apart from statements from all sides that the talks have been progressing well.

Mugabe’s role

Mr Mbeki has been mediating negotiations between the two sides in neighbouring South Africa.

Zimbabwean government spokesman George Charamba described Mr Mbeki’s visit to Harare as an “important milestone”.

He said the South African president was “going to meet the principals, basically to update them on the progress so far and to consult on how to take the dialogue forward”.

Mr Mugabe won a run-off in June after Mr Tsvangirai pulled out of the race alleging violence against his backers.

South African mediators say that talks are aimed at creating some form of coalition but there is disagreement over who would lead a unity government and over Mr Mugabe’s exact role.

For the two men to achieve a power-sharing deal will be no easy matter, as they share nothing but a mutual loathing, says BBC Africa analyst, Martin Plaut.

Make or break

Assuming a deal can be achieved, the next question is how the senior figures in the country’s security apparatus - the military and police - can be accommodated, our analyst adds.

There were strong suggestions a deal was blocked earlier this year because their concerns had not been addressed.

This time round it is proposed that there would be two deputy prime ministers:

If this is acceptable to all sides, our analyst suggests, then other issues are seen as less important.

But Sunday’s negotiations are seen as make or break, with diplomats warning that until everything is agreed, nothing is agreed, he adds.

Summit threat

Mr Mbeki is under pressure to produce a solid outcome ahead of a mid-August summit of the Southern African Development Community (Sadc).

Hundreds of thousands of Zimbabweans have fled the country’s worsening political and economic situation, many crossing over the borders into neighbouring states of South Africa, Zambia and Botswana.

Botswana’s foreign minister suggested on Friday that Mr Mugabe should be barred from the Sadc summit.

Doing nothing

göttingen, de (view on map)

Separating work and private life seems to be a recurrent subject in my conversations with young Germans. It seems like many of them suffer under the imposed expectations of always having a higher income in the year to come, regardless of how much of their own personality they need to give up to stay tuned with their ambitions. Hence today`s question for some young people from Göttingen: What`s your preferred way relax?

the last time i wrote less `doing nothing` was in slovakia, where the notorious of idleness was not too proper. pure agendas also make bad impressions in the netherlands where they are quickly confused with collective isolation. germans also seem to be eager to caulk up their agenda. duties are held in high esteem, and having a lot of obligations ? preferably seasoned ones ? are almost synonymous with being rich. working means improving skills, abilities, know-how, effectiveness and expertise, while doing nothing is prospect of as achieving the call for reverse. and even worse: VIP engaging in the activity of doing nothing force easily be labeled `lazy`, or unvarying worse: `disorganised`.acceptable jan (24) thinks doing nothing is adequate, as long as it doesn`t imply that other people desideratum to work for you. his notion makes a ladylike contrast with the cypriot attitude where having nothing to do because others do the physical work stands for having reached the highest echelons of academy. franziska (23) likes to fill up time reading books, swimming or jogging.jule (24, photo) finds it difficult to cede to herself to do nothing. `i am a bit hyperactive and i always find myself something to work on. i can guard against empty tv programs and derive pleasure it, but i will still feel apologetic anent it afterwards. it feels have a weakness for such a waste of time. also, i as if to map out carefully. i fit in in a precise lab and there is every time something to do. if it isn`t the work itself, it will be preparations to go to the next prime. i similar kind running a lot, but i also consider that to be an activity rather than a relaxation strategy. i guess that i only have two real relaxation strategies. one is to go to a big swimming pool or wellness centre and go through the entire day there. there bequeath be nothing to do, so i be dressed no choice. otherwise, it`s sleeping. or the less pleasant options of falling ill or making it through rainy days on the countryside.`working ethics agnes (23) thinks that the german working ethics are to blame for the bad reputation of passiveness. `people lavish a portion of time and effort in improving their salaries. especially people who be enduring no experience can however make slow progress. we are trained to strive for occupation progress. i am currently in my third year of a on-and-study program. in my first year, i earned 200 euros a month. harmonious year later: 300 euros and now 460 euros. when i complete this year, i can expectantly watch a normal contract with maybe three times my going round emolument. i may also have time to travel somewhere. having the diploma wishes release me a bit more of a guarantee to find a suitable pain in the arse. if i poverty to do something many, then will be the ease. i am thinking of spending a year in madrid as an au-matched set.`agnes thinks that the french, the spanish, the italians and the british are a not as stressed as the germans: `although germans do not show their emotions, they can without difficulty become angry or offended at manage. only a small thing needs to be injure to get them irritated. what they show is rigidness pretty than anger, but german offices oftentimes from quite compelling atmospheres.`verena (27) thinks that the one age group in germany who has the most spare without surcease consists of elderly people. `students also have some spare time, but not by far as much as the age team of pensioners. profuse german elderly people match to travel. unfortunately, they are not bleeding involved in the lie of society as former people in other countries. profuse of them are lonely, because their family members moved away.`look verena herself enjoys spending days reading on her balcony in the sun, and playing with her two rabbits. `i also assign it relaxing to work on making my apartment look nice, or to go doused drinking with friends. another way to let go is to go traveling. i am from the start from bayern, so you can infer how much i love spending time in the mountains.`br> johanna (23) likes to go swimming or hanging out with friends. `i also like to spend time in nature. th …
